Mountain Pine Reach Forest Reserve

The Mountain Pine Reach Forest Reserve is one of the great natural attractions of Belize. It was the first reserve created in the country with the intention of protecting native forests and ecosystems.

Created in 1944, the Pine Ridge Mountain Forest Reserve is the oldest and most protected area in Belize, it is located in the Cayo District, 57 km from Belize City.

The reserve consists mainly of Honduran pines, a species of pine from the Caribbean. The reserve is characterized by its deep ravines, large granite outcrops, rivers, and landscapes.

Mountain Pine Ridge is rich in fauna and flora typical of Belize, due to its location it maintains a tropical climate, the weather is already 39 degrees. The Mountain Pine Ridge reserve is located on a solid granite floor, some areas are limestone, there is a part with remains of a limestone pot that belongs to the Jurassic period.


One of the most popular places in the reserve is the viewpoint with views of the Thousand Pies Waterfall, where visitors can observe the highest waterfall in Central America. However, there is no direct access or the ability to swim in the waterfall. Those who wish to swim in the cold waters of the reserve can go to the River On Pools, a series of small waterfalls interrupted by large granite rocks that form several attractive pools for swimming. Staying in this reserve also places visitors close to Caracol, an impressive ancient Mayan site that contains the tallest pyramid in Belize.



The Mountain Pine Ridge reserve there are types of animals such as pumas, jaguars, ocelots, coatis, tapirs, there is also a small population of crocodiles, it also has different types of birds, including toucans, typical of the region, which stand out for its beautiful colors, there are also birds that migrate and appear in winter.




If you visit the reserve, you will find sinkholes, caves, rivers, and other amazing places. To get to the place is 1 hour and 30 minutes, but you will find nature of Belize in all its splendor, you must be in good condition for a long walk, which in the end will be worth it.
