Cueva "Actun Tunichil Muknal"

One of Belize's many archaeological sites, it is characterised by original pottery and skeletons of an ancient civilisation.

In the Cueva Actun Tunichil Muknal (or ATM cave for short) is the gateway to Xibalba, the Mayan underworld. This cave contains ceramics and human skeletons that have merged with the cave walls.

This excursion requires a good degree of fitness. The first visitors will take a 45-minute hike through the rainforest. The hike crosses three streams. There is a river flowing through the cave. To enter the cave, you will have to swim to the mouth of the cave. It is necessary to swim for a distance of 33 feet (10 m), in water that is 16.6 feet (5 m) deep. Eventually you will reach a rocky site.

The ATM cave covers 3 miles (5 km). Part of the route through the cave is rocky and some parts of the path are covered with pools of water. Most of the way through the cave you will have to walk through water or swim. Along the way you will see stalactites or stalagmites.

After 600 feet (183 m), you will climb about 6.5 feet (2-3 m) to a ledge in the cave above the water. This part is considered sacred ground, where you can walk barefoot (but you are allowed to leave your socks on). After you ascend to the top of the cave, you will see pottery of all sizes. Inside the cave more than 1,400 artefacts are catalogued; pottery, tools and ceremonial objects dating from 1 to 1000 AD - including more than 200 pots.
